Integral health and care: healing also transforms

Between 2023 and April 2026, Puntos de Encuentro carried out the project Promoting Women's Integral Health in Nicaragua.

What we did

Care, networks of trust and multipliers

The process combined individual psychological care, mutual-aid groups, body therapy, community education and professional training for psychologists. The experience showed that healing, building networks of trust and training multipliers strengthens women's autonomy and the sustainability of their communities.

The Salud Emocional communication campaign accompanied the process and surpassed 90,000 views.

How the model worked

Five components that reinforced each other

The project Promoting Women's Integral Health (2023–April 2026) was designed to care for women who had lived through violence, grief or displacement in a context where public mental-health services are scarce. Its approach combined care and community:

  • Individual psychological care, with sessions sustained over time: 2,620 therapy sessions reached 699 women.
  • Mutual-aid groups, where shared experience becomes a network of trust and the first response in a crisis.
  • Body therapy and self-care practices, because trauma also lives in the body.
  • Community education in the territories, so that information on health, rights and care pathways circulates in the neighborhood.
  • Professional training: 42 psychologists completed a specialized diploma course on feminist, rights-based care — capacity that remains in the territory after the project.

In all, 1,809 women took part directly. The project concluded in April 2026 with an external evaluation; its lessons —the importance of continuity, of peer accompaniment and of training those who provide care— guide the next stage of work on integral health and care that the Foundation seeks to fund.

Evaluating to learn

What the external evaluation says

The external evaluation documented the completion of activities, the exceeding of coverage targets and the changes produced by sustained psychosocial support in participants' lives.

Three lessons we carry into the next projects:

  • Free, nearby psychological care is a gateway to exercising other rights.
  • Training local professionals multiplies reach long after funding ends.
  • Mutual-aid groups sustain women when the institution is no longer there.
